Սուրբ Սարգիս զորավարը համարվում է երիտասարդ զույգերի և սիրահարների բարեխոսը։ Ավանդազրույցի համաձայն՝ նա իր որդու՝ Մարտիրոսի և 14 քաջ մարտիկների հետ նահատակվել է հանուն քրիստոնեական հավատքի։ Կոստանդիանոս կայսրը, ով նույնպես համարվում է Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցու սրբերից, նկատելով սբ. Սարգսի արիությունը, կարգում է նրան հարևան Կապադովկիայի իշխան և սպարապետ։ Սբ. Սարգիսը զբաղվել է նաև քրիստոնեության քարոզչությամբ և եկեղեցաշինությամբ։

Երբ Հուլիանոս Ուրացողի թագավորության օրոք սկսվում են քրիստոնյաների հալածանքները, սբ. Սարգիսը հայտնություն է ստանում Աստծուց հեռանալ կայսրությունից։ Նա իր որդու հետ հաստատվում է Հայաստանում, ուր թագավորում էր Խոսրով թագավորի որդին՝ Տիրանը։ Վերջինս Սարգսին հրամայում է ծառայության անցնել պարսից Շապուհ արքայի մոտ՝ զերծ պահելու երկիրը Հուլիանոսի արշավանքներից։ Այսպիսով, Սարգիսը նշանակվում է զորագնդերի հրամանատար։

Ավանդազրույցի ամաձայն՝ նրա զինակիցները, տեսնելով Սարգսի ձեռքով Աստծո կողմից գործած հրաշքները, հրաժարվում էին հեթանոսությունից և ընդունում քրիստոնեությունը։ Սակայն պարսից շահը պահանջում է նրանից պաշտել կրակը և զոհաբերություններ կատարել։ Երբ Սարգիսը հրաժարվում է ուրանալ իր հավատքը և ավերում է բագինը, ամբոխը հարձակվում է նրա որդու՝ Մարտիրոսի վրա և սպանում նրան։ Սարգսին բանտարկում են, ապա՝ գլխատում։

Քրիստոնեական հավատքի համար նահատակվում են նաև Սարգսի 14 զիվորները։ Սուրբ Սարգսի տոնը Հայաստանում նշել են ոչ միայն եկեղեցական ծեսով և աղոթքներով, այլև ժողովրդական ավանդույթներով: Այսպես, օրինակ, Սբ. Սարգսի տոնին նախորդող գիշերը երիտասարդ աղջիկները աղի բլիթ են ուտում և ակնկալում երազում տեսնել իրենց ապագա փեսացուին։

Ընդունված է եղել նաև տան տանիքին կամ պատշգամբում փոխինդ դնել և սպասել, թե երբ Ս. Սարգիսը կթողնի իր ձիու պայտի հետքերը։ Ըստ ավանդույթի՝ այն մարդը, ում ափսեում շաղ տված ալյուրի կամ փոխինդի միջով կանցնի սուրբը, սպասվում է մեծ հաջողություն։ Հնում այդ օրն ընդունված է եղել պատրաստել նաև օձի թթու կոչվող ապուրը։

Այն պատրաստվում էր ոսպից, մանրաձավարից, ալյուրից և եփվում թթվի ջրի մեջ։ Ե՞րբ է այս տարի նշվելու Սուրբ Սարգսի՝ սիրահարների տոնը։ Այս տարի Սուրբ Սարգսի՝ սիրահարների տոնը, նշվելու է հունվարի 30-ին:
