2018-ի գագաթնաժողովում Դոնալդ Թրամփի վատ փորձի պատճառով Սպիտակ տունը որոշում է կայացրել ԱՄՆ նախագահ Ջո Բայդենի ու ՌԴ նախագահ Վլադիմիր Պուտինի հետ համատեղ մամուլի ասուլիս չանցկացնել: Այս մասին գրում է The New York Times պարբերականը:

Նախօրեին հայտնի է դարձել, որ Ժնևում բանակցություններից հետո Բայդենը միայնակ կմոտենա լրատվամիջոցների ներկայացուցիչներին: Ինչպես նշել է ԱՄՆ վարչակազմի ներկայացուցիչը, այս ձևաչափը համարվել է «առավել նպատակահարմար»: Կրեմլը հաստատել է, որ առաջնորդներն առանձին դուրս կգան լրագրողների մոտ: Ըստ ՌԴ նախագահի մամուլի քարտուղար Դմիտրի Պեսկովի՝  «ամենայն հավանականությամբ, դա ամերիկացի նախագահի պրակտիկան է»:

Ըստ Բայդենի օգնականների, ռուսական կողմը պաշտպանում էր համատեղ մամուլի ասուլիսի գաղափարը, բայց ամերիկյան վարչակազմի ներկայացուցիչները «հիշում են, թե ինչպես Պուտինը Հելսինկիում գերազանցեց Թրամփին»: 

2018 թվականին Ռուսաստան-ԱՄՆ նախորդ գագաթնաժողովում Թրամփը, որն այդ ժամանակ պետության ղեկավարն էր, կասկածի տակ էր դրել ամերիկյան հետախուզության կողմից 2016-ի ԱՄՆ-ի նախագահական ընտրություններին Մոսկվայի միջամտության վերաբերյալ հետաքննության արդյունքները և այդպիսով «Պուտինին ստեր տարածելու հնարավորություն» է տվել: Սա բուռն արձագանք էր առաջացրել Միացյալ Նահանգների քաղաքական շրջանակներում: Սենատոր Ջոն Մաքքեյնն այդ ժամանակ ասել էր, որ դա իր հիշողության մեջ «ԱՄՆ նախագահի ամենաամոթալի ելույթներից մեկն էր»:
