Դեմենցիան նյարդային համակարգում փոփոխությունների արդյունք է, որոնք հանգեցնում են կոգնիտիվ ֆունկցիաների հետ կապված խնդիրների: Ռիսկի առանցքային գործոն են ժառանգականությունը, հիպերտոնիան, անառողջ կենսակերպը: Հիվանդությունը գնալով երիտասարդանում է:
