Խաղաղ օվկիանոսում գտնվող Մեծ Արգելախութում վերջին տարվա ընթացքում գրանցվել է մարջանային (կորալ) ծածկույթի ամենամեծ անկումը. դա տեղի է ունեցել Մեծ Արգելախութի երեք հիմնական մարջանային գաղութային տարածքներից երկուսում, հաղորդում է Reuters-ը՝ հղում անելով Ավստրալիայի ծովային գիտությունների ինստիտուտի (AIMS) գիտնականներին։

Մասնագետների կարծիքով՝ վերջին տարվա ընթացքում խութը կորցրել է իր մարջանային ծածկույթի մինչև մեկ երրորդը։ Պատճառը մարջանների զանգվածային սպիտակեցումն է՝ սիմբիոտիկ ջրիմուռների և ֆոտոսինթետիկ գունանյութերի կորստի պատճառով։ Այս գործընթացը, որը կապված է շրջակա միջավայրի ջերմաստիճանի փոփոխությունների և դինոֆիտ ջրիմուռների տարածման հետ, հանգեցնում է մարջանի մահվան։

Գիտնականները վերջին 40 տարիների ընթացքում ուշադիր հետևում են Մեծ Արգելախութի վիճակին: Վերջին 15 տարիների ընթացքում մասնագետները նկատել են մարջանի սպիտակեցման հաճախականության աճի բացասական միտում, ինչը վկայում է եզակի էկոհամակարգի վրա զգալի ճնշման մասին: Մասնավորապես, 2016 թվականից ի վեր գիտնականները գրանցել են զանգվածային սպիտակեցման հինգ ալիք:

Մեծ Արգելախութն աշխարհի ամենամեծ մարջանային խութն է, որը պարունակում է ավելի քան 2900 առանձին մարջանային կազմավորումներ։

Մարջանային գաղութները ձգվում են 2,5 հազար կմ Ավստրալիայի հյուսիս-արևելյան ափի երկայնքով, դրա ընդհանուր մակերեսը կազմում է մոտ 344 հազար քառակուսի կիլոմետր։ 1981 թվականին Մեծ Արգելախութն ընդգրկվել է ՅՈՒՆԵՍԿՕ-ի Համաշխարհային ժառանգության ցանկում։
